From Words to Dates: Water into Wine, Mathemagic or Phylogenetic Inference?

چکیده
Gray & Atkinson’s (2003) application of quantitative phylogenetic methods to Dyen, Kruskal & Black’s (1992) IndoEuropean database produced controversial divergence time estimates. Here we test the robustness of these results using an alternative data set of ancient Indo-European languages. We employ two very different stochastic models of lexical evolution – Gray & Atkinson’s (2003) finite-sites model and a stochastic-Dollo model of word evolution introduced by Nicholls & Gray (in press). Results of this analysis support the findings of Gray & Atkinson (2003). We also tested the ability of both methods to reconstruct phylogeny and divergence times accurately from synthetic data. The methods performed well under a range of scenarios, including widespread and localized borrowing.

Fermentation and characterization of wine from fruits of Phoenix dactylifera, using Saccharomyces cerevisae NCIM 3495
Dates i.e. fruits of Phoenix dactylifera, have tremendous nutraceutical properties. These are rich in minerals, assimilable sugars, water soluble vitamins and fibers. The fruits are consumed to regain vitality which may be lost due to overexertion like in case of field laborers mostly in tropical countries. It can be used to treat spleen disorders since it is rich in iron and antioxidants. In t...
متن کاملStudy on phylogenetic status of Hari barbel Luciobarbus conocephalus (Kessler, 1872) from Hari river using Cytb gene
Recently, Luciobarbus conocephalus from the Hari River was reported for the first time, but there is doubt about the validity of this species between authors, because some of them placed it as a subspecies or synonym of L. capito. Therefore, the present study was conducted to investigate the status of phylogeny and the validity of this species. For this purpose, specimens captured from Hari Riv...
متن کاملDetecting Regular Sound Changes in Linguistics as Events of Concerted Evolution
BACKGROUND Concerted evolution is normally used to describe parallel changes at different sites in a genome, but it is also observed in languages where a specific phoneme changes to the same other phoneme in many words in the lexicon—a phenomenon known as regular sound change. We develop a general statistical model that can detect concerted changes in aligned sequence data and apply it to study...
متن کاملRelaxed molecular clocks, the bias-variance trade-off, and the quality of phylogenetic inference.
Because a constant rate of DNA sequence evolution cannot be assumed to be ubiquitous, relaxed molecular clock inference models have proven useful when estimating rates and divergence dates. Furthermore, it has been recently suggested that using relaxed molecular clocks may provide superior accuracy and precision in phylogenetic inference compared with traditional time-free methods that do not i...
متن کاملProtective Effects of Extract from Dates (Phoenix Dactylifera L.) and Ascorbic Acid on Thioacetamide-Induced Hepatotoxicity in Rats
The ameliorative activity of aqueous extract of the flesh of dates (Phoenix dactylifera L.) and ascorbic acid on thioacetamide-induced hepatotoxicity was studied in rats. Sixty male rats were divided into six equal groups of 10. Two groups were controls, one treated with thioacetamide and one with only distilled water. Two groups received extract of flesh Phoenix dactylifera and intraperitoneal...
